Effective Vocabulary Instruction
Vocabulary development is a key focus area for schools, and rightly so. Research has concluded that any method or programme for teaching vocabulary should employ both direct and indirect teaching (intentional and unintentional), and ensure multiple exposures to new words across a range of contexts. Students should be actively engaged and involved in the work learning process with high levels of oral language use for all students. What that means is that many spelling programmes are simply not producing the desired results for many of our students, and especially ESOL students.
